The early usage was of skiing, as in water skiing and surfing, and used to describe being towed on a surfboard behind a boat with a ski rope

In the early 1980s, Tony Finn developed the Skurfer - the first ever wakeboard. Initially selling them to friends in Mission Bay, Tony began mass producing in 1985 and it became a business. He began selling Skurfers worldwide and traveling around the globe spreading the sport. In 1988, Skurfers were successfully sold in more than 400 stores in the U.S. and 40 countries worldwide and Tony was featured on the cover of “Water Ski Magazine.” In 1989, Skurfer was sold to Kransco where Tony became sales manager and continued to develop the sport of Skurfing for Kransco. He was hired by ESPN as the voice of wakeboarding and announced multiple events including the X games. In 1997 Tony founded Liquid Force; widely recognized as the No. 1 wakeboard brand in the world dedicated to relentless innovation, progressive design, maximum functionality and unparalleled quality.
